Solar Pumping: the what, why, and the how

Interested in learning about Solar Pumping ?

Access to safe and sustainable water supply is a growing concern in every region of the world. In many communities, groundwater is pumped by diesel fuel systems, which are expensive and difficult to maintain. In communities where electricity is scarce, solar energy can be part of the solution.

The highest demand for solar pumps is in rural off-grid areas, which are currently underserved or served by expensive fuel-driven pumps. Solar pumping is most competitive in areas with high sunshine rates, including most of Africa, South America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia; but the technology can successfully operate in almost any region of the world.

"Things are changing; new technologies are constantly emerging. You cannot resist providing you with high-quality technology at the cost you need." When asked about the use of solar pumps for water supply, Jackson Mu, Assistant Director of Operations Planning, Ministry of Water and Irrigation, Tanzania Tazenba said.
In order for solar to be successful, however, this technology needs to be understood and appreciated by water practitioners around the world.

Let's take a deeper look.

The situation has changed dramatically in the past 7 years. The price of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels that power water pumps has dropped significantly and technology has improved, and more water can now be pumped to reach deeper groundwater sources.

Although the initial purchase cost of this equipment is higher than other pumping schemes, its operation and maintenance costs are lower. Especially compared with diesel pumps, solar energy is not only more energy-efficient, but also has a service life of more than 20 years, and the economic benefits far exceed the cost.

The solar water pump system is very simple, including the solar panel itself, the water pump and the power regulator. The new system is very flexible and can be used in conjunction with backup generators and the grid.

The considerations for designing a solar water pump system include various parameters, including: water demand (volume), water storage, water depth (head), location of photovoltaic panels, and solar irradiance. Fortunately, modern software provides a free and user-friendly tool that allows engineers to easily design and size solar pumping systems.

Finally, once the system is up, running, and protected, long-term maintenance becomes critical. This includes equipment warranties and maintenance contracts to ensure that the water stays clean.
